Emails That Don't Suck (with AI): Lesson 3

If you’re just tuning in, I’m creating a free email course live with you. Click here to catch up with Lesson 1, and here for Lesson 2.
Let’s talk about getting AI to actually write in your voice.
Yes, you can train it.
You can build a doc full of writing samples, add your favorite phrases, tone notes, examples, templates…and that works. (That’s part of the process I use when creating a custom Voice Bot for clients.)
But for most people just trying to get started, there’s an easier way:
Brain dump like you’re talking to a friend.
When you write to a friend or coach a client, you’re not trying to craft the “perfect” version of your thoughts.
You just speak. Off the cuff. From the gut.
You tell stories. Drop opinions.
You use real phrases you’d never put in a “professional” newsletter.
And that’s the voice that works best.
When you dump that into ChatGPT, it does two powerful things:
It gives the model more context—what you're trying to say and who you're saying it to.
It gives the model your rhythm—the way you naturally talk, the phrases you use, how you shape ideas.
It’s not about handing the AI a perfect draft.
It’s about letting it help you shape what you already know.
🧠 Step 3: Use AI Like a Thought Partner
In the same chat you’ve been using, paste this:
I want to write an email about [your topic]. Here's everything I'm thinking so far…
Then let it rip.
Ramble. Rant. Overshare.
Use half-sentences, slang, stories, personal examples. Anything that’s real.
Don’t filter. Don’t organize.
Just dump.
💡 Pro tip: Use the voice recording feature in most AI apps. Speaking it out can help you sound more natural.
Then—if it didn’t already create a draft—follow it with:
Now turn this into a rough email draft in my voice. Use as many of my original words, phrases, and ideas as possible.
What you’ll get back isn’t a finished piece. But it’ll sound like you, and it should be at least 70–80% there.
That’s the part most AI users miss.
They skip the dump and get stuck wondering why the output feels off.
Now, if it still doesn’t sound right, you’ve got two options:
Tell the AI what to fix.
Give it feedback and let it have another go. Iterate until it’s good enough to lightly edit.
(Just be careful. Sometimes it’s faster to tweak it yourself than spend 20 minutes prompting your way to perfection.)
Edit it yourself.
Spend 5 minutes making it yours. Then publish.
Here’s what I do
Every email in this series started as a mess.
A block of thoughts, stories, stray lines, and half-formed analogies.
I asked ChatGPT to help organize it and turn it into a first draft.
Then I iterated with it a couple times until it was mostly good enough.
Then I edited the draft into something I’d actually send.
(And pro tip: I fed the final version back into ChatGPT so it could learn the style, tone, and structure I’m aiming for.)
You don’t need a clean outline.
You don’t need a high-effort prompt.
You just need momentum—and a little structure.
What to do next
✅ Pick a topic from your list
✅ Brain dump everything you’ve got
✅ Ask AI to shape it using your own words
✅ Polish it, schedule it, send it
Then repeat.
⚡ Bonus tip:
If you need more ideas, just say:
Based on what we’ve talked about so far, give me 3 more email topics that fit my audience and goals.
In the next email, we’ll talk about the one thing I’ve had to overcome to start emailing consistently.
Thanks for reading,
Nathan
