"The best tool is the one you actually use."

β€” Every productivity guru ever

I've been wrestling with this for months.

ChatGPT or Claude?

I have a paid ChatGPT account. Built up tons of memory and knowledge there. Hard to walk away from that investment.

But I find Claude is better for copy and β€œgetting” my voice.

I’ve been using Poe to create bots using the ever-improving versions of Claude Sonnet.

But the downside of Poe is that the free account doesn’t give you many credits.

So if I share those bots, people have to create and pay for an account with Poe, which means they’re less likely to use my bots and get value from them.

I wanted to share a bot today that creates viral headline ideas for Medium / Substack, so I decided to create it as a custom GPT.

The results were disappointing.

Then just as I was writing this newsletter, I thought I should see how a Claude artifact would stack up.

Result?

The Claude artifact won.

By a lot.

The artifact it built in 2 minutes was beautiful, simple, and created the best output.

How To Do It

I used the same exact prompt across all three:

βœ… Custom GPT (ChatGPT-5) β†’ Built through OpenAI's interface, fed it my instructions for viral headline generation

βœ… Poe Bot (Claude Sonnet) β†’ Used Poe's bot builder with Claude as the engine, same prompt

βœ… Claude Artifact β†’ Pasted the prompt into Claude's free account, asked it to build an interactive tool

Same prompt. Same goal. Three different outputs.

The Claude artifact wasn't just better. It feels like it’s in a different league.

Clean interface.

Well-designed output.

And most importantly, better ideas.

See below for screenshots from each (all three got the idea prompt):

My Take

This test reminded me: different tools do different things better.

ChatGPT has my conversation history. Great for strategizing, thinking through issues, and for a lot of my daily writing/use cases.

The memory feature is clutch.

But custom GPTs often underwhelm.

Claude? Builds cleaner interfaces. Writes better copy.

Poe gives me access to multiple models with better context windows.

The real lesson isn't which one wins.

It's being open to testing.

Using what works best for each job.

Maybe that means paying for multiple tools.

Maybe it means switching between free tiers.

But don't get locked into one just because it's what you started with.
