Danger Zone

Breaking habits

I got back yesterday from a few days of camping with my family.

I had planned to keep emailing while we were gone, but Internet was bad and at some point I decided: I just needed the break.

I let go of the pressure to keep up and gave myself permission to enjoy being outside, with the people I love, in the beautiful weather.

But now I’m back, and in the danger zone.

Because I’d been sending five emails a week, it was becoming a habit.

Now I've missed three days.

Broke the streak.

The voice in my head says:
“It's no big deal. Just take a few more days off and start back up next week.”

But I’ve been here before. I know how this plays out.

When I was writing my last AI newsletter, I took a one-week vacation and didn’t send emails during the trip.

When I got home, I meant to restart…but I didn’t.

A week turned into a month. Then three.

When I decided to restart it required overcoming a lot of inertia.

That’s why I’m sending this today.

Not because it’s the best thing I’ve ever written.

But because I’m restarting.

Sometimes you've got to give yourself grace and the space to take a pause.

But you can’t let the pause become your new pattern.

The real lesson?

I want to get ahead. Ideally, I’d have a few emails written and scheduled so that a break doesn’t throw me off course.

Even if I wanted to tweak something last minute, it’d take just a few minutes, not a full writing session from scratch.

That’s the goal. I haven’t hit it yet.

Life, work, and family have kept me in catch-up mode more than I’d like to admit.

For the next vacation I'll try to get there.

But if I don't start back up now it won't matter.

Because I made a commitment to keep showing up even if it's hard.

And that's the commitment you should make to if you want your business to grow with email.
