ChatGPT isn’t impressed by you.
It’s just polite.
ChatGPT can make you feel like a genius.
You ask it for feedback on an idea or pick something from the list it gave you, and it says things like:
“Great choice!”
“That’s a smart move.”
“Here’s how to do it…”
And for a second, you feel validated.
Like, wow, this advanced technology agrees with me. I must be on the right track.
But here’s the thing: it’s not agreeing because you’re right.
It’s agreeing because it was trained to.
AI models like ChatGPT are trained on huge amounts of data, including customer service data. And they’re designed to be helpful, friendly, and non-confrontational, not to challenge your thinking.
Which means unless you ask for it, you’ll get encouragement without evaluation.
That might feel good in the moment, but it’s not how better ideas happen.
If you want AI to actually help you think, and not just nod along, you have to ask it to take a different role.
Here’s an example prompt you can use:
“I want you to be my critical thought partner. Don’t just affirm my ideas. Look for blind spots, flaws, or better alternatives I haven’t considered. Be direct and constructive.”
You can ask it to come at your idea from multiple perspectives.
You can tell it to be gentle or blunt.
But the important part is asking for challenge.
Otherwise, you’re not leveraging the power of these tools to sharpen your thinking and improve your output.
You’re just being flattered by a very polite machine.
And long-term, that leads to weaker ideas, not stronger ones.
So try it.
Use the prompt above next time you’re working through an idea, and see what changes.
Then hit reply and tell me what you discovered.
I’d love to hear how it shifts your process.
Thanks for reading.

P.S. Even if you give your AI custom instructions or use this prompt one time, it still often reverts to being a “yes-bot”. You’ll need to repeat the prompt often, or at least use it explicitly in those instances where you really do need critical feedback.
