Kim Doyal asked a question in her newsletter this week that’s worth taking time to answer:
What did you want when you started your business? And what do you want now?
For her, at 38, she wanted scale. Visibility. Growth. Being everywhere.
Now?
She wants small groups. Creative work on her terms. No alarm clock. No apologies.
She calls it sovereignty.
Not freedom. Not balance.
Sovereignty: Self-governing. Building what you want on your own terms.
And she says AI finally makes that possible.
Why AI Changes the Game
Before AI, if you wanted to scale, create content consistently, build custom tools, etc, you either had to hustle til burnout, or hire a big team.
Now, you can do all those things as a one-person show leveraging AI.
But it doesn't answer the hard question:
What are you actually building? And why?
The Sovereignty Prompt
Kim included a prompt designed to dig into what sovereignty actually looks like for you.
Here's the prompt:
"I want to get clear on what sovereignty looks like for my business and life. Ask me 5-7 thoughtful questions about: what I actually want my daily life to look like, what fills my soul vs. what I do out of obligation, what 'enough' means for me, and what I'm unwilling to do even if it's profitable. After I answer each question, challenge me if my answers seem surface-level or if I'm giving you what sounds good rather than what's actually true. Push me to go deeper."
Paste it into ChatGPT or Claude.
Answer as best as you can, and be honest.
Because the prompt is designed to get the AI to push back, if you try to gaslight it, you’ll get called out (I did).
My Take
I ran it and ended up spending an hour with ChatGPT working through where I'm stuck.
It helped me see that I've been building a business around the version of me I wish I was.
Instead of the version I actually am.
And if I want to get to that future version of me, I have to be realistic and build with the current me in mind.
Because I’ve learned the hard way:
If you don't deliberately design your business and your life, it will get designed for you.
And you’ll have a good chance of building a business that’s worse than any job you had before.
And it's harder to fix than it is to prevent.
So take a few minutes (or an hour) and run this prompt for yourself.
Get clear on what you want your life, and your business, to look like.
See how you can build that with intention.
And then use AI tp make it easier.
